There are two methods for producing yellow phosphorus.
Blast furnace method: The reduction reaction is carried out under high temperature conditions inside the blast furnace. Due to its many shortcomings such as low phosphorus content in the furnace gas, large furnace gas volume, low gas calorific value, and low phosphorus recovery rate, the blast furnace method has gradually been phased out.
Electric furnace method: The reduction reaction is carried out in a high-temperature environment inside a DC Submerged Arc Furnace. Also known as electric sublimation method. Due to the advantages of good product quality (purity up to 99.9%), high labor productivity, and low cost, the DC Submerged Arc Furnace method for producing yellow phosphorus is currently the only industrialized method, and its advantages are particularly prominent in areas with sufficient electricity supply.
The production of yellow phosphorus by DC submerged Arc Furnace method generally includes seven processes: raw material preparation, electric furnace phosphorus production, refining of crude phosphorus, finished product packaging, tail gas purification and utilization, slag and sewage treatment.
Phosphate ore, silica, and coke that meet the production process requirements will be released in batches in a certain proportion from the storage bin, and then mixed into a uniform mixture and transported to the DC submerged arc furnace silo. The mixture is continuously fed into the closed furnace through uniformly distributed discharge pipes connecting the electric furnace body and the material bin. The electrodes of the electric furnace work at around their rated power, causing the mixture entering the electric furnace to undergo a reduction reaction at 1400-1500 ℃. Iron is regularly discharged from the furnace, phosphorus and iron are recovered at the slag channel, and the slag enters the slag tank (or water quenched slag tank) and is promptly picked up and transported away.
The generated yellow phosphorus, CO, silicon tetrafluoride, and other gases escape from the reaction melting zone, pass through the continuously replenished mixture in the upper part of the submerged arc furnace, and enter the three absorption towers in series through the air duct. After being cooled by circulating water spray, yellow phosphorus condenses into droplets and enters the phosphorus receiving tank at the bottom of the tower with impurities, which is crude phosphorus. Refine crude phosphorus under suitable process conditions to obtain finished yellow phosphorus, and package it.

Equipment characteristics

1.The power consumption is 10%~15% less than that of AC furnace.


2.The consumption of graphite electrode is 40% less than that of AC furnace.


3.Compared with AC furnace, it eliminates the investment of reactive power compensation device.


4.The noise level is 10~20 dB lower than AC furnace.


5.In the smelting process, metal ions in the melt will be concentrated around the negative electrode due to electrolysis, so as to improve the yield and purity of products, which is more conducive to the enrichment of precious metals and other high-value metals.


6.The current direction and electromagnetic field direction of DC furnace remain unchanged. Driven by the magnetic field, the molten slurry circulates in one direction all the time, forming electromagnetic stirring, so that the material melts without dead corners, the product quality is high, and the yield is high.


7.When an accident occurs in the smelting process and a power failure occurs for a period of time, an insulating hard shell will be formed on the surface of the molten liquid. 

Facing this situation, the double electrode DC furnace can start arc smelting again by adding arc striking materials such as coke at the bottom of the electrode.
